December 20th, 2008

Hello friends and family, hope you are doing well. Ed thought it was time to publish a new picture so Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

Today marks the one year anniversary of the accident that took my mother and forever changed my life. You'll note I use the term "change" and not the word "ruin". I'm not sure when I made the distinction between the two but I thank God that I did. It's been difficult trying to figure out how I feel about today. Certainly there is sadness in not being able to say goodbye to my mother and losing her so soon after my dad. On the other hand there is a certain amount of joy and triumph that I feel having beat the odds and made such an incredible recovery. I am blessed.

Today was spent with family, attending a U of O basketball game, and reflecting on this past year and the wonderful relationship I had with Carol, my mother. I am one lucky woman.

Overall, I feel good. Physically, I'm doing very well and able to walk further and further as time goes by. I haven't seen my buddy John (the leg guy) for almost five weeks. I'll go in for a tune up after the first of the year. My left foot and ankle seem to hurt/ache more then anything right now and that could be due to the cold weather we've been having. The right wrist is coming along and I may actually see a bit more rotation then prior to the last surgery. All of this is very good news.

I had contemplated closing out the blog today given the anniversary date but may keep it up for a little bit longer. It has proven to be a good communication tool for out of town friends and family. It's been good for me as well in allowing me to express myself and share feelings and experiences.

However, sooner or later all good things must come to an end. I appreciate so much the emails, phone calls, and comments I've received over these past few months. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the love, support, and encouragement I've received.

Peace to you and your families this holiday season.

Thursday, December 4th

Hi Everyone, hope this quick note finds you well. Hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving.

We're into the month of December, and almost a year has gone by since the beginning of this blog. I'm trying to take each day at a time and not let things overwhelm me. Some days are better then others. Physically, I'm doing well. I'm trying to walk more and going to the DAC each day really is good for my psyche. My wrist is getting better although I don't see any change in the mobility. It's still early so cross your fingers.

I've begun decorating the house and doing some Christmas shopping. I know these next few weeks will be a challenge but I'm trying to stay positive and busy. The sunny weather certainly is a blessing.

Not too much to report so I'll close for now.

Peace,
Marta B.

Sunday, November 23rd

Hi everyone, hope you're inside staying warm this evening. Two plus weeks after surgery my right wrist is coming alone. I'm still fairly sore and swollen. The surgeon not only removed the plate but removed some of the bone that had fused together so perhaps in the future I would have more rotation ability. We won't know how that goes for several weeks and/or months. Ice and Tylenol have been my constant companions.

The kids will be here for Thanksgiving as well as our good friends the Harder's. Our family has a lot to be thankful for today and every day. I certainly think of my mother each day and try and focus on the good memories rather then the sadness I feel at losing her almost a year ago.

I start volunteering tomorrow at one of the elementary schools here to read to 2nd graders for an hour each week. I'm very excited as reading is one of my favorite things to do.

Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Thanks for all the phone calls today although the rest may not get answered until tomorrow. Marta's pretty tired from the days events. The Surgery on her right forearm went as well as can be expected this morning. The Slocum Dr's were able to remove one of the metal bars, approximately 6" in length from the outside of her right forearm. The second, on the interior, will probably be left there forever.

While removing the screws, nuts & plates the Dr's were also able to grind down some of the fused wrist bone hoping to return a slight bit of motion to her right wrist. Pretty sore for now but we should be back at it in a few days.

I guess the good news is we just about have enough stainless steel piece's back in hand to make an unbelievable wind chime that will never rust. I shiver at the cost !!!!!!!

Thanks for caring.

Tuesday, October 28th

Hi there, hope you're all doing well. Ed and I just got back from Phoenix, Az with a group of friends. We went down there to watch the Ducks play football. Overall, it was a great experience. It's another one of those "firsts" for me after the accident. My biggest fear was all of the walking (would my prosthetic leg work okay, etc) as well as going through airport security.

Luckily, everything went like clock work. I was able to walk, sit in the sun and relax with good friends, and had no problems going through airport security (set off tons of bells and whistles though given all the metal in my body, ha ha).

I will have surgery next week on my right wrist so cross your fingers that I breeze through that as well.

Peace & Friendship

Tuesday, October 14

I walked a mile and a half today! Cane in one hand, Lucy in the other. I'm sure it wasn't pretty if you were a passing motorist watching us head up Crescent avenue, but by gosh I did it.

Peace,
Marta B.

Wednesday, October 1

Hello! Welcome to fall. I had a nice visit with my brother Tony last week. He is hoping to move to the Phoenix area next year to be closer to me and my aunt Kathey who lives in Sisters.

Still working out at the DAC at least four days a week. I've been walking Lucy as well trying to build up that left leg. As much as the prosthetic leg is a pain and huge adjustment it truly is the stronger of the two legs. Lefty is still pretty weak which frustrates me as I use to be such a strong walker. Ah well, this to shall pass. Wrist remains the same with surgery tenatively scheduled for November.

To the 9-1-1 Cares Community, if I haven't thanked you previously, thank you for all of your thoughts, prayers, and notes over this past nine months. You have know idea how much that has meant to me and my family.

Peace to you,

Marta B.

Tuesday, September 16

Hello! It's been quite awhile since I put something out on the blog. Hope this quick note finds you well. Not too much new here. Seeing the prosthetic leg guy quite a bit (twice a week again)as I now have two different legs to work with. I was able to stand for 40 minutes at my niece's soccer game the other day with moderate discomfort, not too bad. Still going to the DAC 4-5 days a week to use the recumbent bicycle. Walking the dog on other days (which is a challenge in itself as she tries to take off, chasing cats and birds). Still not up to that mile yet but I'm getting closer.

The wrist surgery has been delayed until the first part of November. I'm anxious to get the plate out to see if that will give me some more movement and less pain.

My brother will be here this Friday. Ed and the kids are fine. Two more weeks and Michael and Emily will be back at the U of O.

Stay cool, and as always thank you for thinking of me and my family.

Friday, August 29

Good Morning, Ed has gently reminded me that I haven't sent out a blog since last Monday.

Not too much to report other then good news from the physical therapist (Don) at Sacred Heart.

I see Don for the legs and had not seen him for three weeks when I met with him this past Wednesday. He couldn't believe how well I was walking (with and without the cane) and put me through a bunch of mobility tests (balance, walking up and down stairs, walking around a set of cones, timed me for speed). I'm happy to report that I passed all of the tests with flying colors. So.... I'm done with that phase of therapy. I'll check in with Don in a few months to see how I've progressed.

Still seeing John the leg guy each week and am trying to get used to the newest prosthetic leg. This has been a tough one for me in terms of comfort, balance, occasional back pain, etc. More work to be done.

The right wrist remains the same. I'll be scheduling surgery to remove the 6" plate early to mid September. Cross your fingers on this providing me a bit more range of motion.

Ed is good. Kids are fine. Emily will turn 21 next week. She will move out to her own place mid September. Michael has been out since the first week of August. My brother will be out for a visit mid September so I'm looking forward to that.

I have a couple of volunteer possibilities in the hopper for the fall so that should be rewarding. This going from 0 to 60 in terms of work to retirement has been a huge adjustment.

As always thanks for your interest and support in my recovery. We're into the ninth month since the accident and I am very grateful for how far I've come.

Fondly,
Marta B.

Monday, August 18

Hi everyone, it's been too long since I checked in. Hope you're well? I've been trying out (kind of a demo deal) a new leg. I won't bore you with all of the details but there are some advantages and disadvantages to it. I meet with John the leg guy tomorrow to go over the pros and cons. Nothing is easy but certainly better then not being mobile.

Ed and I were able to walk through the fair yesterday for a couple of hours so that was okay.

The right wrist is hanging in there. Sore of course when I do too much but I am trying to use it more and more.

I'll be scheduling surgery early to mid September. This is to remove the 6" plate.

Other then that things are good. Michael has moved out into his apartment and Emily will move early to mid September. Lucy will be sad, as will I.

To Deb from Colorado.... it was wonderful seeing you while you were in Eugene!

Marta B.

Thursday, August 7th

Good Morning! I wanted to acknowledge and thank members (past and present) of the Lane County Sheriff's Office for the retirement gathering they provided me on Monday, August 4th.

I was, and still am humbled and overwhelmed at seeing so many old friends and colleagues from the County. Sheriff Burger, thank you for your presentation and lovely shadow box you gave me on behalf of the department. The crystal bridge that the County Commissioners gives it's employees is out of the box and sitting on our desk in our home office. It is beautiful and a nice memento of my years of service with the County.

It was a wonderful event, one that I will never forget. Thank you to all who attended.

Sunday, August 3rd

Hi folks, how are you? I've been busy with physical therapy appointments and trying to organize kids for the move back out to apartments before September.

Therapy continues to go well. The right wrist is still problematic when trying to lift things of any significant weight, or use it for any length of time. I'm still doing my exercises and working on it. The legs continue to gain strength. I've worked out at the DAC (gym) a couple of times using the recumbent bike and that felt good.

We attended the Ward Insurance company picnic on Friday and that was a lot of fun. Still catching up with old friends for the occasional coffee or lunch date which is always uplifting. The good days seem to be gaining on the bad days so that's very encouraging.

Thank you all for your continued interest and support. It's hard to believe we're into the eighth month since the accident. I'm very grateful for the progress that I've made and am determined to work hard in my recovery.

Best Wishes to all.

Thursday, July 24

Hi Everyone, hope you're doing well. This will be a short note today as my right wrist and hand are really hurting today. Many of you email me and I'm sorry if I can't get back to you right away. I'm good for a just few emails a day given the wrist.

Still doing physical therapy and trying to walk as much as I can. Some days are better then others that's for sure. I'll keep on truckin....

Wishing you a lovely day and hope you can get out in the sunshine.

Happy Birthday to sister-in-law Barbara!

Tuesday, July 15th

Hi there, are you hot enough! I thought today was supposed to be cooler, but guess not. My poor flowers are really starting to look ragged.

Today was a busy one. I had physical therapy on both the legs and wrist. I continue to gain strength and balance. There are so many people up at the outpatient place at Sacred Heart that are worse off then I am I leave there each visit feeling very fortunate, regardless of my struggles. I'm now working towards getting a second leg/foot so the whole trial and error deal begins again. I wear it for a few days, report back to the prosthetic guy, adjustments occur, wear it again, etc. I will be seeing this guy much longer then any of the doctors and therapists. I'm trying to walk and stand on my right leg more so the pain and discomfort are increasing depending on the day. Still I'm able to go about my daily business fairly easy and of course loving it that I can drive on my own.

The wrist surgeon is hoping that when I get the 6" plate out mid to late September that perhaps by range of motion will increase. He isn't counting on it but remains hopeful.

Nothing else too newsy other then trying to keep cool and enjoying the kids home even though there both so busy we don't see them much.

Peace & Friendship
Marta B.

Monday, July 7th

Hi everyone, thought I would catch you up on what's new here at the Barclay house. Ed and I attended the Olympic Trials over an 8 day period. It was an awesome experience. We saw some incredible events during that period of time. I walked quite a bit (1/2 mile to and from Hayward Field each day) and one day stood for approximately two solid hours.

That's the most I've been able to walk and stand since I came home four months ago today. I'm down to one appointment a week for the right wrist and legs. I still see John the leg guy at least once sometimes twice a week. I am seeing progress, especially, in my ability to walk.

We're in the process of getting our house painted (outside) and Lucy is not happy about having the workers in the front and back yards (driving us nuts with the barking). Other then that the family is good, busy working. Emily is attending a night class at the U of O. Ed's sister Barbara is here this week from Birmingham, Alabama so that will be fun to visit with her.

More scoop later...

Marta B.

Friday, June 27th

Hi everyone, sorry it's been so long since I last put out a blog. Hope you're enjoying this warm weather! I met with the surgeons this week and things continue to progress. My left ankle, foot, and femur area are healing well. More physical therapy over the next month or two and more walking will aid in recovery. The right wrist is coming along. No plans to take the plate out just yet. I will continue with physical therapy and look to the fall to get the plate out. I experience pain and discomfort with the wrist when using it too much but given the damage to it, that's not surprising.

The prosthetic continues to be a work in progress and I'll see John the leg guy early next week for a further tune up. I was able to walk for 25 minutes the other day with some discomfort but I was still able to do it. All in all I'm doing okay.

Other news.....Ed and I are off later today to attend the Olympic Trials. We'll take in events over the next ten days. The Sheriff's Office is in the process of planning a retirement gathering for me mid to late July. I'm looking forward to that, seeing old friends and colleagues and closing out that chapter of my life.

Enjoy the sun and keep those emails coming. I love to hear from folks and appreciate your well wishes.

Tuesday, June 17th

Good Morning! Two big things happened last week I thought I would share. I made my first visit back to my office (Lane County Sheriff's Office) since the accident. I had a wonderful time visiting with old friends and colleagues, lots of hugs and tears. Two hours later I was on my way home. Now that I've broken the ice so to speak I feel more comfortable in popping in again in the future. A retirement gathering is being planned to occur within the next few weeks.

My second accomplishment last week is walking my little dog Lucy. For those of you that know me you know Lucy (Yorkshire terrier) is like my third child. Cane in one hand, Lucy in the other... it was great! I'm no speed demon but I'm out there.

Physically, I'm doing okay. I'm starting to have more back pain which could be from the accident or could be old stuff (disc and muscle strain stuff) resurfacing. I've been told by the therapists that this is common the more mobile I become. Legs and wrist are coming along.

I'm walking more in terms of distance, but it sure isn't easy. We've put my parents home up for sale in Harrisburg. While that was hard it's time. Both kids are now home (Lucy is in heaven) until August 1st when they move into their respective apartments.

Take care and enjoy the sunshine.

Sunday, June 8th

What a gorgeous day today, eh? Ed and I went with some friends to the Prefontaine Classic (track meet), and had a great time. Yesterday was difficult but keeping busy helped. Thank you to friends and family for sending emails and phone calls making sure I was okay.

More appointments this week for physical therapy on the legs and wrist. My balance has improved almost 50% since starting therapy mid March. The range of motion in my right wrist is slowly improving. I was at a high school graduation party yesterday and was on my feet for a full hour. This is huge given the discomfort of the prosthetic leg.

Happy to be home, healing, and on the road to recovery. Hope you have a great week!

Tuesday, June 3rd

Hi everyone, how are you? I'm having a great day! As luck would have it I had all three appointments in one day (physical therapy on the legs, right wrist, and meeting with John the leg guy). Talk about feeling productive... Ed's right this really is a full time job (ha). Oh, and except for the appointment early this morning at Sacred Heart (thank you son Michael) I drove to the others. Driving to the hospital isn't the issue... it's how far I have to walk once I park the car.... being squired around in a wheelchair once in awhile is nice.

My aunt will be here all day tomorrow. We're planning on running some errands, taking in a movie, and going out to dinner to celebrate my mother's birthday. Carol would have been 74 this coming Saturday, June 7th. Celebration might not be the right word but we do want to honor her in some fashion.

Kids are good, studying hard for finals next week. Ed is fine, enjoying his new office (Ward Insurance moved to a beautiful new building on Country Club rd), and working out with his buddies at the DAC.

That's all for now, thanks for checking on me.

Regards,
Marta B.

Thursday, May 29th

Hi there, hope this post finds you well. Our brief anniversary trip to the coast was great. Overall I'm doing okay. I feel like I have days similar to the weather. Partly cloudy some days (sad) and then other days, sunny and warm. To be expected, and I'm sure as time goes on sunny days will outnumber the cloudy rainy ones. Therapy continues and my therapists are happy with my progress. The leg is fitting more comfortably and on some days I'm able to be on it for an hour at a time. Doesn't sound like much but I'm hoping to hit my goal of walking a mile by June 20th.

June will be a tough month with both my parents birthdays and their anniversary but we'll get through it. My aunt is coming over next week and we will honor my mother's birthday at King Estate winery (we went there last year and she loved it).

Other then that I'm enjoying getting back to reading, household chores (yes even those seem fun for now), lunches with friends, etc. The driving is awesome! I'm so happy to take myself to most appointments and not be afraid to be on Coburg road at 3:30 in the afternoon. Feeling more independent has been good for my morale.

Warm Regards,
Marta B.

Saturday, May 24th

Hello! Hope you are having the start of a great holiday weekend. Ed and I are packing up and going over to the coast to celebrate our 28th anniversary today. We're meeting our good friends the Harder's and the Combs. Happy birthday to our dear friend, Rick.

More later.....

Tuesday, May 20th

Hello, what happened to our nice weather? Oh well, I'm sure our flowers, grass, and gardens appreciate the rain.

Sorry it's been awhile since a new blog was posted. Here is the latest. Physical therapy on the right wrist continues. There is some movement and improvement in my range of motion but it's going fairly slow (as expected). Right wrist is great other then some nasty looking scars. Left leg is coming along with lots of home exercises, walking around a couple of blocks, and physical therapy at Sacred Heart. Right leg is a work in progress but we're getting closer to finding a good fit.

All of my therapists and John the leg guy have been wonderful (patient too). I was able to purchase several pairs of shoes over the weekend (thank you Gary at Burch's for your patience and help) so am now feeling a little more normal instead of always having to wear tennis shoes.

Ed and I went out to Harrisburg this past Sunday to check on my Mom's house. I drove both ways (through Coburg) and felt very good about my driving. I'm using my left foot to break and so far (seeing Ed hold his breath while I'm at the wheel is a bit funny) getting the hang of it.

Today marks the fifth month since the accident. There have been no tears so far today. I miss my Mother and my foot every single day but I am adjusting. I feel so lucky to be here with all of you and am so grateful for your love and support (ok now I'm starting to bawl). While the therapy appointments and exercises get a bit tedious as Ed says this is my full time job now. I'll continue to work hard. My wrist is aching so going to quickly close.

My aunt is here for a couple days so that will be fun. As it's raining the plan is to go catch a movie later today.

Hope you've all voted? Take care and have a good week.

Marta B.

Tuesday eve,

Holly crap..............I think I have finally caught my breath. Yes, I figured what ever Marta wanted on Mothers Day we would do, no questions asked it was what would happen.

Driving, yep, I said if you want. What could it hurt, Marta, a Chrysler Town & Country Van open parking lot ( supplied by Jeff Lansdon) moments of driving and we would be off to a safer arena. Buy some flowers, go take a walk, not on your life................

I parked and turned over he helm, pretty amazing my first ride at 2 G's in a soccer moms rig. What a start, hello Taladagga Nights. Holy crap the back of the lot,,,,OOP's my body now feels like a crash test dummy the brakes are unbelieveable. Thanks Les Schwab. We make a sweeping turn, hello NASCAR now we are trying to park. Safe. No motion, I'm trying to focus.

Yes, we were successful, Marta can drive, we still have a few things to work out (starting & stopping) but independence is only a new set of tires away. I am confident.

All kidding aside. we continue to move our lives back on track. We will continue to practice driving and getting Marta the oppertunity to have more independence.

Happy Mothers Day to all of you, a little late ( I'm still dizzy ) to all of the moms that have had a possitive impact on our home and lives these last few months.

Talk to you soon, Ricky Bobby.

Sunday, May 11

Happy Mother's Day! I'm having a great day so far. Ed took me to Starbucks for coffee and a treat this morning. Heard from both kids by telephone, they'll come over for dinner this evening. We picked up Gramme 'E' (Ethel, Ed's mom) and did our annual run to Decker's nursery. It was a beautiful drive and we scored some lovely baskets. Thank you to Uncle Mike, Denise, and my nieces Amanda and Alyssa for the dozen roses and delicious peanut butter cookies.

Feeling better then I expected in terms of not having my Mom here with me. I know that she would not want me to be tearful or sad today. She is with me in spirit.

This afternoon Ed took me to an office parking lot so I could try my hand at driving. I did pretty well for the first time out with the prosthetic leg. It's definitely different and it will take several weeks to get used to the gas and brake but I can do it.

Hope you enjoy today.

Thursday, May 7th

Hi there, well, today is my second full month home. Quite a few changes over the past two months. Early to mid March got the boot off of the left leg. That was huge in terms of feeling more confident going up and down our stairs. The first part of April got all of the bolts and screws out of the left foot and ankle. Chris at Slocum took the cast off on the right wrist which really has given me the ability to write (a little) and type some on the computer.

I want to thank my friends and family for all the many trips to Slocum and Sacred Heart for the physical therapy appointments. I am according to the doctors way ahead of schedule and that's due to the physical therapy ( and maybe my stubborn streak).

Not much new this week other then appointments and lunch out with friends (yeah).

Mother's Day is coming and I will remember my mom with love and affection (and a few tears I'm sure). For those of you who didn't know Carol she was one heck of a gal.

Be sure and vote!

Fondly,
Marta B.

Tuesday Eve.

Another week of therapy, seems like it takes a long time. I really hope that I can make some progress with my right leg, lately it seems to always hurt. I have to keep focused. I am told I am ahead of schedule but it seems like I am stalled out. Oh well I can walk to the mail box.

Great weekend, sunshine and I was able to see some of my favorite young ladies play sports. Amanda Barclay, basketball, Alyssa Barclay soccer, and the little one Danielle Bartko played a soccer game Sunday, life is good.

I'll be back with more soon,

Marta B.

Friday, May 2nd

Good Morning! Hope this blog note finds you well and looking forward to a sunny weekend. I had a nice week. For some reason I had two free days without ANY physical therapy. I spent Wednesday and Thursday with two different girlfriends. We went out to lunch, shopping, hung out, saw a movie, etc. It was great.

Yesterday, I was at Sacred Heart for leg physical therapy (left leg) and was able to walk on a treadmill for five minutes (slowly). Don my therapist continues to be encouraging in pushing me to get back to "normal" (walking).

Today I have wrist physical therapy and can expect things to be a little more aggressive in terms of what they can do to the wrist given the good news last week (bones are healing really well). Ed and I will see John the leg guy this afternoon. I think things are slightly improving in that area.

I've been having dreams about driving so that might not be to far off in my future. I don't have a fear of being in a car nor of driving, just concerned about how this will work with the prosthetic leg.

Warm Regards,
Marta B.

Monday afternoon.

Sorry for being so neglectful about writing. Seems we have been busy with family things and to be honest I have just forgot by nightfall.

Marta had relatives in town the last few days checking in with her and her progress. Doctors & therapist still consume the daytime hours, by evening Marta is usually pretty run down. Seems that post accident the sleep patterns have not settled down and a full nights sleep just does not seem to happen, put that on the Christmas list.

Still struggling with the learn to walk program but a walk to the end of the street and back is now possible, its a start.

We did get in a wheelchair ride around the bike path along the river on Sunday. Got to grab the nice weather when we can.

Thursday, April24th

Hi folks, how are you? Ed and I spent a couple of hours seeing all three surgeons at Slocum Center yesterday. After checking the xrays the "leg" doc is very pleased with the bone growth and healing although when asked how long my foot and ankle might be swollen his response (with a smile on his face) was "months". Oh well, it felt great to have the stitches out.

Now the really encouraging news.... the right arm doctor came in with my right wrist xrays absolutely beaming. Things are looking so good that I can now go without my splint and can start to be a little more aggressive with physical therapy. The range of motion is still not there but could be improved after more therapy . The doctor said that things couldn't have looked better and was so pleased that the bone he used from the heel of my right foot (maybe a blessing in losing that foot somewhere ???) was "perfect" in terms of overall healing and bone growth.

Good news from Slocum.. yahoo.

Ah... but not so fast (okay a small cloud on the horizon, not a storm)... How is that right leg doing (prosthetic) you might ask???? Still a pain in the behind but I have another appointment with the guy tomorrow afternoon. We're still trying to get the right fit and from what I'm told this can and usually does take months. I'm into this part of the process about 3 so I have a ways to go.

A special hello to my friends and colleagues at the Sheriff's Office especially those of you that may be facing lay offs. I miss you and am so proud to have been associated with you and the organization. I know it's tough right now but you'll come out on the other side of this budget mess, I promise.

Thank you for those that keep up on the blog. I appreciate your prayers and support.

Warm Regards,
Marta B.

Sunday, April 20th

Hi everyone, hope your staying warm! It's hard to believe that last weekend we enjoyed sunshine and 80 degree weather, while this weekend it snowed. Spring time in Oregon, gotta love it.

We had a nice weekend hanging out at home, having dinner with friends, running a bunch of errands (I was able to walk around 5 different stores on Saturday) and attending a basketball game for niece Amanda.

Not much to report other then more physical therapy, further changes with my prosthesis requiring more appointments and doing lots of exercises at home. Lucy couldn't be happier to have me around. I'd take her for a walk but given last week (falling) I might wait a bit longer so as not to do a face plant on St. Kitts avenue.

4 months today since the accident and I'm feeling stronger everyday. Thank you for your prayers and well wishes.

Take Care,
Marta B.
